Maryland Document Routes

Maryland notarized documents typically require certification by the Clerk of the Circuit Court in the county where the notary was commissioned before the Maryland Secretary of State can authenticate the document. State or county-issued certified records follow their own state-authentication route.

Common Maryland Files

  • Maryland-notarized affidavits and powers of attorney
  • Birth and death certificates
  • Marriage and divorce records
  • Police or criminal-history records
  • Corporate good-standing documents
  • School records and diplomas properly prepared for certification

Apostille or Standard Certification

For Hague destinations, qualifying Maryland documents receive an apostille and generally do not continue to the U.S. Department of State. For non-Hague destinations, Maryland issues a standard certification before the file continues through federal authentication and, when required, embassy legalization.

Why County Matters

For notarized Maryland documents, the county where the notary was commissioned controls the Circuit Court certification step. Greenhouse identifies that step before the file is sent to Annapolis.
