What Remote Online Notarization Is
Virginia permits commissioned electronic notaries to perform qualifying electronic notarial acts using live audio-video communication and required identity-verification procedures. The notary must be physically located in Virginia during the electronic notarial act.
Common Uses
- Affidavits and sworn statements
- Business and corporate documents
- Powers of attorney when accepted by the receiving party
- Consent and authorization forms
- Certain real-estate or legal documents when eligible
- General documents requiring a Virginia electronic notarization
International Document Warning
Remote notarization and apostille are not automatically interchangeable. The receiving authority may require a paper original, wet signature, certified copy, or a particular authentication chain.
Before You Use RON for an Apostille File
Virginia’s Authentication Division currently states that it cannot authenticate an electronic notarization with an Apostille or Great Seal. If your document is ultimately going abroad, Greenhouse should review the intended destination before the notarization is performed.
